THIRTEEN

Annie had never been inside a prison. Even though prior to working with Swift and the MCU, she had been a member of the probation service, hers had been a post release role seeing probationers in her own office. So it was nothing like she had imagined from her hours of watching crime dramas on the small laptop tucked into her camp bed.

An officer buzzed them through the gate; Annie went first, patted down by the guards with a watchful eye on her from the scary looking dog in the corner. They passed through a metal detector and out into a building that felt very much like the police station. Yellowy blue walls met with squeaky laminate flooring and bright strip lights. The only difference was the intermittent thick metal doors which required a swipe card and a key to open.

They were deposited in a bright, airy room with high, barred windows, and tables and chairs fixed to the floor. It was a large room, enough to feel spacious which Annie was glad of, because being unable to see outside was making her skin itch. She paced the floor, wondering how on earth the prisoners got used to being locked up inside. It was enough to make Annie never even break the speed limit again.

“You okay?” Swift asked, appearing by her side with a calming, warm hand on her arm.

“Not sure I like it in prison,” she replied, tugging at the collar of her shirt. “Even if it’s only for a few hours on a Sunday.”

“That’s the general idea,” Swift replied, putting an arm around Annie’s shoulder, and squeezing.

“But surely the prisoners still have to feel… I don’t know, okay with where they are living?” Annie asked, feeling sorry for all the men locked up in the cells beyond the room they were waiting in.

Swift squeezed Annie’s shoulder again and went to pull out a chair for her, forgetting it was bolted to the floor.

“Your kindness for all of humanity is what makes you such a wonderful person and friend, O’Malley,” he said, smiling.

“And your chivalry knows no bounds,” Annie replied, laughing at the chair. “We should probably sit down and look like we know what we’re doing. I imagine they’re watching us on the cameras, and we don’t want them to chuck us out before we’ve even spoken to… who are we speaking to again?”

“Alfie Leek, cellmate of Luke Hart.” Swift took a breath, about to say more when the lock on the door behind them beeped and clunked and the door swung open to the face of a young man, no older than mid-twenties. Shackled at the hands and dressed in a standard issue grey tracksuit, Annie felt her heart go out to him as the guard pushed him forwards until he dropped into the seat opposite.

“I’ll be at the door if you need me,” the guard told them before turning to Alfie Leek. “You. Behave.”
